Squares - punishment writing on squared paper
Squares are set by the page, to be done on squared paper that is readily available form stationery shops.
How many squares to set
Set a specific number of pages to be filled in.
Don't go for too many at first as theses pages can take longer than expected, around 45 minutes a page is reported.
Subject matter
The subject word can be picked to suit a situation or just a random word.
Numbering and layout
The layout is important in that each line has to be one square to the left of the line above.
There should be no free space to write on the front, so it is suggested to add other information required by the Wife on the back, such as time taken.

Tips
The key feature of squares is to pick a good word. Good words make diagonal striped patterns, when looked from a distance, on the page by aligning the ascenders and descenders. So good words are those with bits that stick up or down. rebel, letter quarterback would all be good words. When setting a squares task it is best for the Wife to write the word in the middle of the page, this makes it much harder, as some words have to be written up to it and picking the correct starting point is difficult. Make sure the word on the line below is written one square back (to the left) from the start of the original word. This makes the word appear down the page as well. The picture shows what this means. The red word 'squares' is written and then as the page fills the blue word appears. Squares are normally written in one colour but complexity can be introduced by changing pens for one letter. This will produce coloured diagonal stripes. |
